Growing onions from scraps

Ever wonder that you can grow onions from the bulb of the onions you bought from the store instead using set bulbs? Yup, you can simply grow some onions from the one you brought at the market. It'll just need a little space and some time to grow them from scraps.I used the hydroponic method to promote the roots growth.

1.Choose a good onion.
Well, there many kinds of onions that you can choose like the long-day onions, yellow onions, white onions and many more. Each with their own distinct taste to suit your dish. The one i harvested was the red onion.

2.Place on top of a jar filled with water.Just make sure that the water barely touch the bottom of the onion to promote roots growth.Simply place it next to the window in your kitchen as i did.
3.After few days(mine 4 days), you'll see the roots begin to grow and the top of the onion sprouting.Remember to change the water daily and wait till for two weeks.
4.Prepare the soil.I've read about this.It is better to prepare the soil for the plot several months in advance to have better onion crop down the line, so i used the soil that we've been using to harvest the bak choy last time.
5.Cut and  plant the stalks.Remember to be careful when removing the outer part (slices of onions) to get the stalks at the center.Use a fork instead using knife so that you will not over cut and hurt the stalks.Divide each stalk with some roots so that you can grow several stalks from one onion bulb. You can just simply use the removed parts in your dish. :)
6.Plant and give adequate water. If you're planning to harvest them in a same pot or area, remember to plant them 12 to 18 inches apart.

7.Harvest the onions.Onions are fully ripe when the tops appear golden yellow.
See, simple..! Hmm.. here's a tip.To choose a good one, left them in a dry space for few days and observe for the one that you can see some roots from the bottom of the onion or a little sprout from the top.I once chose the onions from Hokkaido and it didn't work. Then i shifted to Saga's onions and it worked.Hihi.. can't wait to have my own harvested onions in my dish :p

Strawberry Lover

Assalammualaikum..~ ~ ~

Yiiipppiiiieeee...!!! Strawberry dah berbuah..!! It's time to pick the strawberries and have a good snack time with the ice cream :D We've been planting these strawberry plants like a year ago but never had a chance to taste it until now.. huhu..~ For the whole year, we planted only two strawberry plants, but i guess the birds help to spread it's seeds.. sooo.. now we have like four to five strawberry plants..!!!
Can't wait all the flowers turn into the little sweet cute strawberries..!! Hihihih..~
Strawberries can be seen..!! just few weeks more to taste the little red berries :)
I'll just wait for few days more until they're red and ripe enough..!!! Uuuu.. so cute..!!!
You're going into my stomach little cutie..!! > <
Holaaaaa... welcome to mama..!!! Yyyiipppiieee..~
Yup, already in my stomach...!!!! hoho.. yummy..!!!!!
Just simply drop by any nursery and get yourself a strawberry plant. It's great to taste your own crop and what's the most important it, you can save your money from getting any strawberry whenever you crave for ice -cream ;)

Hydroponic Garden

Assalammualaikum :)
Recently, i've been interested with the scraps that i can get from my kitchen and cultivate them using the hydroponic method..!! Hoho~ No need to buy them again and now i can just simply grow them at the corner of my kitchen.

No need much space, no need special care, no need soil and grow forever..!!!!! Well, there are many kinds of vegetables you can try out but for the time being, i've just tried out for the onions, leeks and carrot tops. It's fun and easy and most important.. save your money :) ~ *you're welcome *p

1.Carrots
Before you throw away the scraps, think twice! Keep them and you'll get the top carrots to garnish your dish or to feed your terrapins :) Here's day one..!
See...!! I'm surprised to see how fast it started to grow. Here's day two..!!!!

After four to six days, you'll see the the green tops pop out healthily.
Day nine and still growing..!!! uhuhu..~ you're cute..!
2.Onions
Just put it on top of a jar to promote roots growth
Well, this was day five!! :)
This was after 12 days.. ready to be planted in soil :)
Just remove the onion bulb and keep for cooking.Divide the roots and shoots to plant in soil.
Day 17..!! :D
If you're planning to plant the onion without using the hydroponics and only plant the roots from the bottom of the onion, the result will be quite slow. This was 17 days..! Short compared to the hydroponic (pic above).
As conclusion, hydroponic are much more faster to promote the growth of the shoot.
(starting from the duck
[left]shortest shoot=roots from the bottom of the onion was directly planted into soil from first day
[right]longest shoot=went hydroponics for 15 days, then planted into soil )

3.Leeks
You will not have problem at all.. easy and just let it grow~
cut then grow then cut then grow then bla bla bla..~ ~ ~

Just simply provide a small space for the little plants and let them grow. And without you even notice, they are there when you need them right at the corner of your kitchen.Besides, i don't know why but i always felt like having these greens make my kitchen look even cuter and feel happier while cooking.Hihi..
No hobby?Kill the bore by trying these hydroponic stuffs and you'll be surprised to see how good they can grow and cheer you up :)

Tuesday

Projek Taman Discovery

Assalammualaikum..

Soooo glad that our effort in getting back the small garden is in progress.. hihihi.. Even though it's quite busy for this semester as there're many reports and tests coming for the next four months.. but still, we're able to find some time, appreciating the nature by gardening :)
What's the most interesting part is when we found some carrots from the crops that we harvested last year..haha.. can't believe that it worked..!Plus, even after a year left untouched, the strawberry plants are still in good condition and some of the flower are still alive..!But still, the lemon tree and Sazanka tree will need a good care to heal :'(
Hope that this time, the mini garden project will succeed.. Insyaallah.. :)

Monday

Hanami Ogi Park + Projek Taman

Assalammulaikum..
How's the day...?It`s great here as we just got back from a sweet Ohanami at the Ogi Park and guess what, the Projek Taman had just get started.. yippiiieee.
April... it is no doubt in Japan is all about Sakura!!! Everything was so great and wonderful when we had a picnic around the pink cherry blossom at the Ogi Park. Our eyes sparkled as we saw strands of yatai(food annd games stalls) right before we entered the Ogi Park.Having the yummy yaki ika, crunchy fried potato and sweet chilling soft ice cream is a must for us everytime we stroll around the yatai.. hihi..
In Japan, it's regular that everyone will bring along the blue mat where you can get from the daiso or seria and have a good picnic under the Sakura trees.Note that the Sakura at the Ogi Park are so famous, even they have Sakura in Taiwan too,the Taiwanese are willing to fly to Ogi Park just to have a look at the blooming Sakura when it is time.
Ohh.. not to forget, the Projek Taman had just started.Hahaha... We had our own little garden last year but we just got too busy with studies as the curriculum was kinda hard and pack for the second year semester. The garden turned into mess after we had no eyes on it but now, we're back...!!!Huahahaha... looking forward for a cute mini garden where we can have a good teatime in summer.. Hihi..
